EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the captivating world of The Last Heir, as depicted in this evocative image from the 1909 production of Stephen Phillips' adaptation of Walter Scott's classic novel, "The Bride of Lammermoor." The scene shows the heart-wrenching conclusion of the tragic tale as three hags, their wizened faces etched with sorrow and prophecy, gaze down upon the hero's hat, the only remnant of him after he was swallowed by the treacherous quicksand of the Kelpie's Flow. First performed at the King's Theatre in Glasgow on March 23, 1908, and later at the Adelphi Theatre in London on October 5, 1908, this production then embarked on a tour to the Grand Opera House in Belfast on October 28, 1909. The theatrical adaptation of Scott's novel was a popular success, with its rich storyline, memorable characters, and stunning stage production drawing in audiences across the UK. The image captures the essence of the pantomime's magical and mysterious atmosphere, with the hags' ominous presence and the ominous sea and cliffs in the background. The use of hats as a symbol of the hero's demise adds an intriguing touch to the scene, leaving the viewer with a sense of wonder and intrigue. Step back in time and experience the magic of The Last Heir, a timeless tale of love, betrayal, and the supernatural, as brought to life on the stage over a century ago.
