EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, Harriet Anne Butler, Marchioness of Donegall, is depicted in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born in 1799, Harriet was the daughter of Sir John Butler, 1st Baronet, and his wife, Lady Anne Coke. She would later marry George Chichester, the third Marquess of Donegall, in 1819, beginning a life of luxury and social prominence. The Marchioness of Donegall is shown here in a refined and sophisticated manner, dressed in the height of Regency fashion. Her elegant gown, adorned with intricate lace and delicate floral patterns, is a testament to the opulence of the era. Her dark hair is styled in soft curls, framing her delicate features and expressive eyes. The subtle blush on her cheeks and the gentle smile on her lips add an air of warmth and charm to her otherwise formal appearance. Harriet Anne Butler's marriage to George Chichester brought her into the ranks of the British aristocracy, and she quickly became a prominent figure in London society. The Marchioness of Donegall was known for her intelligence, wit, and grace, and she was a beloved hostess and patron of the arts. She was also an active philanthropist, using her wealth and influence to support various charitable causes. Despite her many accomplishments and the privileged life she led, Harriet Anne Butler's life was not without tragedy. She was widowed in 1853, and her only son, George, predeceased her in 1854. Harriet Anne Butler passed away in 1860, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, elegance, and philanthropy. This portrait, taken in the final years of her life, serves as a poignant reminder of her enduring charm and the grace with which she navigated the complex world of Regency society.
