Born in England in 1723, Hannah disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the British Navy during the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1744. She served for several years, seeing action in the Caribbean and Europe, and was eventually discharged in 1750. Upon her return to England, Hannah revealed her true identity to her family and the public. Her story quickly gained notoriety, and she was hailed as a heroine and a curiosity.
