EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the circa 1930s, showcases the impressive ruins of Borcovicium, also known as Housesteads Fort, located along Hadrian's Wall in the Roman province of Britannia. The fort, which dates back to 122 AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, served as a defensive fortification against the northern tribes, stretching from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. At the heart of the fort lies the Praetorium, or General's quarters, where the commanding officer and his troops would have resided. The ruins of the Praetorium can be seen in the background, with the remnants of a tent-like structure suggesting the presence of temporary lodgings. Hadrian's Wall, also known as Vallum Aelium, Vallum Hadriani, and the Picts Wall, was a formidable barrier, measuring approximately 73 miles long and up to 20 feet high. The wall was constructed to protect the Roman Empire from the northern tribes, particularly the Picts, and to secure the province of Britannia. The image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 2nd century AD and the height of the Roman Empire's power and influence. The ruins of Borcovicium and Hadrian's Wall continue to captivate visitors and historians alike, offering a tangible connection to the rich history of the Roman Empire.
