This evocative page from The Sphere, a leading illustrated weekly publication of the time, features six individual portraits of German ex-royalty who were forced to abdicate following Germany's defeat in the First World War. The top left portrait is of ex-King Ludwig III of Bavaria, who ruled from 1886 to 1918. He was the last monarch of the House of Wittelsbach in Bavaria and abdicated on November 7, 1918. Middle top, we see the portrait of the ex-German Crown Prince, Wilhelm, who was the last German Crown Prince and the last heir to the German Imperial Throne. He renounced his right to the throne on November 28, 1918. The ex-King Wilhelm II of Wurtemberg is depicted in the bottom left portrait. He ruled from 1891 to 1918 and was the last King of Württemberg. He abdicated on November 30, 1918. The ex-Duke of Brunswick, Wilhelm, is shown in the second portrait from the bottom. He ruled from 1884 to 1913 and abdicated on November 12, 1918. The last two portraits are of the ex-Grand Dukes. The ex-Grand Duke of Hesse, Ernst Ludwig, is depicted in the third from the bottom portrait. He ruled from 1877 to 1918 and abdicated on November 9, 1918. The ex-Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Frederick Augustus II, is shown in the bottom right portrait. He ruled from 1853 to 1918 and abdicated on November 12, 1918. These portraits serve as a poignant reminder of the end of an era, as the German monarchy came to an end following the country's defeat in the First World War. The men are all dressed in their military uniforms, reflecting their roles as military leaders and monarchs during wartime. This historical photograph is a testament to the significant political and social changes that took place in Germany during the aftermath of the war.
