Born in New Hampshire, USA, in 1816, Bowen was deeply moved by the plight of the Indian people and felt called to serve as a missionary. He arrived in India in 1841, initially working with the American Baptist Missionary Society in Serampore, West Bengal. Bowen's dedication to his work was unwavering, and he soon became known for his tireless efforts to translate religious texts into local languages, including Bengali, Assamese, and Khasi. His translations were not only instrumental in spreading Christianity but also played a significant role in promoting literacy and education in India. Despite facing numerous challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences, and even persecution, Bowen remained committed to his mission. He established schools, hospitals, and orphanages, and his work touched the lives of countless individuals. This photograph, taken in the later years of Bowen's life, captures the wisdom and serenity that came with his many years of service. Bowen's legacy continues to inspire and influence the world of missionary work and interfaith dialogue.
