This evocative oval portrait captures the distinguished visage of Jean Froissart (circa 1337-1410), a renowned French chronicler and poet, whose works have left an indelible mark on European history. Froissart's career spanned over seven decades, during which he chronicled the Hundred Years War between England and France, as well as the reigns of several French monarchs. Born in Valenciennes, Froissart began his literary career as a trouvère, or troubadour, composing songs and ballads in the vernacular. However, he is best known for his historical works, including "Chroniques," a multi-volume account of the Hundred Years War, and "Les Blanches Fleurs," a chivalric romance. Froissart's writing style was innovative for his time, as he employed a more narrative approach and included dialogue and descriptions of battles and courtly life. In this portrait, Froissart is depicted wearing the distinctive hat of a cleric or scholar, with a fur-trimmed robe and a simple white tunic. His serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of wisdom and authority.
