This evocative photograph captures the scene of an armour-plated locomotive battery during the French siege of Paris in 1871. The Franco-Prussian War, which began in July 1870, ended with the defeat of the French army and the subsequent siege of Paris by the Prussian forces. During the siege, which lasted from September 1870 to January 1871, the Prussian army imposed a blockade on the city, cutting off supplies and communications. To counteract this, the French government and the National Guard made every effort to keep the city functioning, including the use of armour-plated locomotives to transport supplies and reinforcements.
