Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904): A Visionary French Sculptor and the Creator of the Iconic Statue of Liberty This photograph captures the enigmatic and visionary French sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, in the prime of his career. Born on August 2, 1834, in Colmar, Alsace, Bartholdi is best known for his masterpiece, the Statue of Liberty, which stands as a beacon of freedom and hope in New York Harbor. Bartholdi's artistic journey began at an early age, and he studied under various renowned sculptors, including Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Antoine-Louis Barye. His innovative and eclectic style was influenced by his travels throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Statue of Liberty, originally titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," was conceived in 1865 as a gift from the people of France to the United States to celebrate the centennial of American independence. Bartholdi's design, which features a colossal woman holding a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, was selected from over 100 proposals. Construction of the statue began in 1875, and it was completed in 1884. The statue's copper-green exterior was a result of Bartholdi's innovative use of oxidization. The statue's pedestal, which was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, was finished in 1886. Bartholdi's groundbreaking design has become an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, attracting millions of visitors each year. This photograph, taken in 1880, captures the artist in the midst of his greatest achievement, a testament to his vision, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his craft.
