This striking image captures The Fort at Chitral as viewed from the river during the Chitral Expedition of 1895. The expedition, led by British forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Robert Robertson, was mounted in response to a crisis in the princely state of Chitral, located in present-day Pakistan. The fort, a formidable defensive structure perched atop a rocky outcrop, had been under siege by local forces loyal to the rebellious ruler of Chitral. The British, keen to secure their imperial interests and maintain peace in the region, decided to intervene. The Chitral Expedition took place between March and April of 1895 and saw the British forces successfully relieve the besieged garrison at the fort.
