Born on May 12, 1845, in the village of Pamiers, in the south of France, Fauré displayed an early aptitude for music, beginning his formal studies at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of eleven. Fauré's prolific career spanned over seven decades, during which he composed in various genres, including chamber music, orchestral works, and above all, vocal music. He is best known for his art songs, or mélodies, which showcase his mastery of melody, harmony, and text setting. Fauré's innovative approach to harmony, characterized by the use of modal mixtures and chromaticism, set him apart from his contemporaries and paved the way for the harmonic language of the 20th century. Fauré's contributions to music extended beyond his own compositions.
