EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic Ewelme Almshouses in Ewelme, Oxfordshire, England. Established in 1437 by William de la Pole, 1st Duke and 4th Earl of Suffolk, these almshouses were founded with the intention of providing shelter and support for thirteen poor men, along with the establishment of a Grammar School, making it the oldest school building still in use as a state school in the United Kingdom. The almshouses, officially known as 'The Two Chaplains and Thirteen Poor Men of Ewelme in the County of Oxford,' have seen a reduction in the number of almsmen to eight, but continue to operate as a charity under the Ewelme Trust. The architectural beauty of the building is evident in this image, with its cloistered design and the towering church and school in the background. The tranquil garden adds to the serene atmosphere of this historical site. The Duke of Suffolk, a significant figure in English history, played a pivotal role in the establishment of these almshouses and school, which have stood the test of time and continue to serve their intended purpose. The rich history of this parish is encapsulated in the intricately designed walls and the peaceful surroundings, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking a glimpse into England's past.
