This evocative photograph captures the determination and grit of Matthew Henson (1866-1955) and Robert Peary (1856-1920) on their historic expedition to reach the North Pole in 1909. Henson, Peary's trusted companion and navigator, is seen here bundled up against the harsh Arctic conditions, his fur-lined coat a testament to the extreme cold.
