Born into the aristocracy as the third son of the 1st Earl of Tankerville, Cardwell forged a successful political career that spanned over three decades. He first entered Parliament in 1837 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Morpeth, and went on to serve various roles in the government, including Home Secretary and Secretary of State for War. Cardwell is best known for his role in the reform of the British military, particularly the Cardwell Reforms of 1867 and 1873.
