EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking half-length portrait captures Edward VIII of the United Kingdom in his military uniform and adorned with a multitude of medals, showcasing his service in the British Army. Taken in 1936, just before his abdication from the throne, Edward appears confident and resolute in his regal attire. Born on June 23, 1894, Edward was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He joined the Royal Navy in 1910 and served during World War I, seeing action in the Battle of Jutland. In 1917, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, where he became an accomplished pilot. Edward's military career continued after the war, and he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was also the Colonel-in-Chief of several regiments, including the Grenadier Guards and the Welsh Guards. The medals Edward wears in this portrait attest to his military accomplishments. The most prominent is the Military Cross, awarded for gallantry in the presence of the enemy. He also wears the 1914 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal, all of which were issued for service during World War I. The year 1936 brought significant changes to Edward's life. He abdicated the throne on December 11, 1936, in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. This decision shocked the world and marked the end of Edward's reign as King. This historic photograph, taken in 1936, offers a glimpse into the life of a monarch who defied convention and left a lasting impact on British history.
