EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the young and radiant face of Edward VI, the only legitimate son of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. Born in 1537, Edward's reign began at the tender age of nine years old following his father's death in 1547. As the only child of Henry VIII to survive infancy, Edward held great significance as the heir to the English throne. The portrait, created during Edward's reign by renowned English engraver and printmaker, G. Vertue, showcases the young king's striking features and regal bearing. Edward's hair is meticulously styled, and his gaze is steady and confident, reflecting the maturity and wisdom beyond his years. Edward's reign was marked by religious and political upheaval, as he sought to assert his authority against powerful factions vying for control. Despite his young age, he demonstrated a keen intellect and a strong commitment to Protestantism, leading to the further establishment of the English Reformation. Tragically, Edward's reign was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis in 1553, at the age of just 15. His death marked the end of the Tudor dynasty, and the beginning of a new era in English history. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Edward VI's brief but significant reign and the legacy he left behind.
