This striking portrait captures Edward Hyde Villiers, 5th Earl of Clarendon (1846-1914), also known as Lord Hyde, during his tenure as Lord Chamberlain in the late 19th century. Born into the British aristocracy, Clarendon was not only a prominent Liberal Unionist politician but also an accomplished sportsman. The Earl's political career began in earnest in the 1870s, representing the Liberal Unionist Party, which supported the Union with Ireland while maintaining a commitment to liberal principles. Clarendon's dedication to public service extended beyond politics, as he served as Lord Chamberlain from 1892 to 1895. In this role, he oversaw the administrative and ceremonial duties of the English court, including the appointment of court officials and the organization of royal events.
