EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr. Syntax, a popular character created by English satirist and cartoonist William Combe, is depicted in this 1820 print being robbed in the notorious St. Giles area of London. The image captures the moment of surprise and alarm as Dr. Syntax, dressed in his doctor's coat and hat, is set upon by a gang of muggers. The thieves, masked and wearing dark clothing, are shown in the act of relieving the doctor of his belongings, while one holds him back with a threatening cane. The scene takes place on a dark and deserted street, with cobblestones underfoot and railings lining the side of the road. In the background, a coach can be seen making its way through the fog, oblivious to the crime taking place. The doctor's horse and carriage, hitched to the railings, adds to the sense of isolation and vulnerability. St. Giles, located in the heart of London, was notorious for its high crime rates and was often depicted in literature and art as a den of thieves and rogues. The area was known for its narrow, winding streets, which made it easy for criminals to ambush their victims. Despite the danger, Dr. Syntax, with his satirical and humorous nature, is shown here with a determined expression, as if he will not let the thieves get the best of him. This print, with its vivid depiction of crime and danger in 19th century London, is a fascinating glimpse into the past and a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by people in the city over two centuries ago.
