The Napoleanic Wars (1803-1815) were a series of major conflicts pitting the French Empire against European powers, with the Russian campaign of 1812 being one of the most significant. The French army, led by Napolean Bonaparte, had invaded Russia with over 600,000 soldiers in June 1812, intending to conquer Moscow and extend his empire. However, the harsh Russian winter, scorched earth tactics, and relentless pursuit by the Russian forces under Tsar Alexander I forced the French to retreat. As the French army retreated westward, they were pursued relentlessly by the Russians. The Beresina River presented a formidable obstacle, and the freezing temperatures made crossing it a perilous endeavor.
