This photograph showcases Paul Cornu, the visionary French inventor, seated confidently at the controls of his groundbreaking invention, the Cornu Helicopter No. 1, in the early 1900s. Cornu's pioneering work in the field of aviation paved the way for the modern helicopter, as he was the first to successfully design and fly a true helicopter, which could hover in place and take off and land vertically. The year was 1908, and the world was on the brink of a new era in transportation. The Cornu Helicopter No. 1, a marvel of engineering, was a two-cylinder, biplane helicopter with a unique rotor design. The rotor blades were fixed to the top wings and rotated counterclockwise, while the tail rotor counteracted the torque. Cornu's innovative use of a gyroscopic stabilizer, which helped maintain balance during flight, was also a significant advancement. Paul Cornu's passion for aviation began in 1895 when he built his first flying machine, an early fixed-wing aircraft. However, it was his helicopter designs that truly set him apart. In 1900, he patented a helicopter design, and by 1906, he had built a small-scale model. After several years of refining his design and conducting extensive tests, Cornu was ready to take to the skies in the historic Cornu Helicopter No. 1.
