EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Consuelo Vanderbilt, the American heiress and first wife of Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough, with her two sons, the Marquis of Blandford and Lord Ivor Charles Spencer-Churchill, in the year 1903. Consuelo's marriage to the Duke was a controversial one, as she was coerced into the union by her mother. The Duke and Duchess of Marlborough are depicted here in elegant Edwardian attire, with Consuelo's striking features and the boys' bright eyes and cherubic faces drawing the viewer's attention. The little boy on the right, who would later become the 10th Duke of Marlborough, adds an air of royalty and heritage to the image. After her divorce from the Duke in 1920, Consuelo devoted much of her time to social welfare and was later married to Colonel Jacques Balsan. This portrait is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy during the Edwardian era, showcasing the opulence, elegance, and family dynamics of the peerage class.
