Commune Damage 11: The Ruins of Pont de Champigny, Paris, 1871 During the tumultuous events of the Paris Commune in 1871, the city's bridges became strategic targets for the Communard forces as they sought to hamper the advance of the French government troops aiming to recapture Paris. In this haunting image, all that remains of the Pont de Champigny stands as a testament to the destruction wrought during those fateful days. The Paris Commune was a revolutionary period in French history that lasted from March 18 to May 28, 1871. Following the Franco-Prussian War and the abdication of Napoleon III, the people of Paris, led by the working class, established a radical government to govern the city. The new regime faced significant opposition from the French government and the Versailles army, leading to a bloody conflict. In an attempt to prevent the government forces from crossing the Seine River and advancing on Paris, the Communards destroyed several bridges, including the Pont de Champigny. This bridge, located in the southeastern part of Paris, was a vital transportation link between the city and its suburbs.
