EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Frederic Rollet (1875-1941), a legendary figure in the annals of the French Foreign Legion during World War I. Known as "Le Pere Legion" or "The Father of the Legion," Rollet is seen here with four other soldiers, likely at the battlefield of Verdun in northern France. The Regiment de Marche de la Legion Etrangere, or the Marching Regiment of the Foreign Legion, had recently won the prestigious Legion d'Honneur for its regimental flag. Rollet's unwavering courage and leadership were instrumental in the regiment's successes during the Great War. Clad in his full military uniform, complete with a helmet adorned with the insignia of the French Foreign Legion, Rollet exudes an air of pride and determination. His soldiers, equally resolute, stand proudly beside him, their helmets and medals gleaming in the sunlight. The First World War was a time of great sacrifice and hardship for the soldiers of the French Foreign Legion. Amidst the chaos and carnage of the battlefield, they fought valiantly for their country and for the honor of their regiment. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their unwavering courage and the indomitable spirit of the French Foreign Legion during the darkest hours of World War I.
