EDITORS COMMENTS
On August 27, 1783, history was made in the skies above Paris as the unmanned hot air balloon, Charles, took flight from the Champ de Mars. This groundbreaking moment marked the second successful manned hot air balloon launch, following the pioneering journey of the Montgolfier brothers just two months prior. However, this time, the balloon was propelled by a different means. The innovative design of Charles involved drawing inflammable air from iron using vitriolic acid. This daring experiment was the brainchild of Robert, an unknown inventor, who aimed to push the boundaries of human achievement. With the balloon filled and ready, the anticipation was palpable as onlookers gathered at the Champ de Mars to witness this extraordinary event. As the sun rose over Paris, Charles began to ascend, leaving the city behind and soaring towards the small village of Gonzesse. The journey was a testament to human ingenuity, as the balloon defied gravity and traversed the French countryside. However, the peaceful flight was not to last. Upon reaching Gonzesse, the balloon was met with hostility from the local peasants, who, fearful of the unknown, attacked the vessel. The fragile balloon was damaged, bringing an abrupt end to the flight. Despite the setback, the success of the unmanned flight served as a stepping stone towards further advancements in ballooning technology and the exploration of the skies. This image, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, immortalizes the daring and groundbreaking journey of Charles, the second hot air balloon to grace the skies of Paris.
