This striking image, titled "Bison Americanus," is a historical print of the American Bison, also known as the Buffalo or Wisent, as it was once referred to by the renowned naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. Bison were once the most numerous large mammals on the North American continent, with an estimated population of 30-60 million roaming the Great Plains before European settlers arrived.
