EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Australian convict ship Success as it moors in Providence, Rhode Island, United States, in the early 1910s. The Success was one of the many vessels used to transport convicts from Australia to its colonies in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The image offers a glimpse into a significant chapter in the history of both Australia and the United States. The Success, a three-masted iron barque, was built in England in 1851 and was later acquired by the Australian government for use as a convict transport vessel. Between 1868 and 1872, the ship made five voyages to Western Australia, carrying over 1,200 convicts. The harsh conditions on board and the long journey across the Indian Ocean often led to high mortality rates among the convicts. After completing its service as a convict transport, the Success was sold to American owners and was used for various purposes, including cargo transport and as a training ship for seafarers. Its arrival in Providence, Rhode Island, marks the end of its career as a convict ship and the beginning of a new chapter in its history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often overlooked connections between Australia, the United States, and the convict transportation system. It also highlights the important role that maritime history plays in shaping the narratives of our past and the enduring legacy of the ships that carried the stories of countless individuals across vast oceans.
