Amidst the rugged terrain of Austria's northernmost region, the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) make their way towards the Italian border in this evocative photograph taken near Cormons, close to the town of Gorizia, towards the end of the First World War. The year is 1918, and the end of the conflict is in sight. The rural landscape, dotted with quaint farmhouses and winding roads, provides a stark contrast to the raw power and determination of the marching American soldiers. The AEF, led by General John J. Pershing, had been deployed to Europe in 1917 to support the Allied forces in their fight against the Central Powers.
