EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Algernon George Percy, the 6th Duke of Northumberland (1810-1899), a prominent British Conservative politician of the Victorian era. The Duke, who was also known as Lord Lovaine between 1830 and 1865 and Earl Percy between 1865 and 1867, is depicted in formal attire, exuding an air of sophistication and authority. Born in 1810, the Duke's political career began under the Earl of Derby, serving as Paymaster-General and Vice-President of the Board of Trade in 1859. Later, he was appointed as Lord Privy Seal under Benjamin Disraeli from 1878 to 1880. The Duke's heritage is reflected in the background of the portrait, which showcases the rich history and grandeur of the House of Percy. The House of Percy, one of the oldest and most distinguished noble families in Britain, traces its lineage back to the 11th century. The family's coat of arms, featuring the ancient symbol of the stag's head, is proudly displayed on the wall behind the Duke. The portrait, taken in 1884, was captured by the renowned German photographer Friedrich Muller for the prestigious publication, Vanity Fair. The image, published in 1900, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian era, as well as the political landscape of the time. Despite his prominent political career, the Duke's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, first to Lady Elizabeth Montagu-Stuart-Wortley, with whom he had nine children, and later to Lady Mary Elizabeth Craven, with whom he had no children. The Duke passed away in 1899, leaving behind a rich legacy as a prominent figure in British history.
