This photograph captures the stern yet resolute visage of Alexandre Emile Herbillon (1825-1893), a distinguished French military commander of the late 19th century. Herbillon's military career spanned over five decades, during which he served in Algeria, Mexico, and Indochina, rising through the ranks to become a General in the French Army. Born on March 21, 1825, in the town of Toulouse, Herbillon displayed an early aptitude for military life. He joined the French Army in 1843 and saw his first action during the Crimean War. In the following years, he participated in numerous campaigns, including the conquest of Algiers in 1830 and the Mexican Expedition in 1862. Herbillon's most significant military achievement came during the Franco-Siamese War (1893), where he led the French forces to victory against the Siamese army. His strategic prowess and unwavering determination earned him the moniker "The Lion of Indochina." This photograph, taken in the later years of Herbillon's life, captures the seasoned commander's steely gaze and the deep lines etched on his face, bearing testament to the many battles he had fought and the countless miles he had traveled in the service of his country.
