This enchanting photograph captures a tender moment between Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII of the United Kingdom (1841-1910), and her grandson Olaf, the son of her eldest daughter Princess Maud of Wales (1869-1938). The image, taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, depicts a young Olaf, dressed in a sailor suit, gazing up at his beloved grandmother with an expression of admiration and affection. Born on December 1, 1844, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Alexandra of Denmark became the Queen Consort of the United Kingdom upon her marriage to Prince Edward in 1863. Her marriage brought a sense of modernity and Scandinavian influence to the British monarchy, and she was beloved by the people for her kindness, grace, and devotion to her family. Olaf, the eldest child of Alexandra's eldest daughter Maud and her husband, Prince Charles of Wales (1879-1952), was born on August 21, 1895. He was known for his love of the sea and the navy, and would go on to serve as a submarine commander during World War I.
