This evocative image captures a pivotal moment during the Albigensian War, a significant religious and political conflict that ravaged the Languedoc region of France between 1209 and 1325. The Albigenses, also known as Cathars, were a religious sect who rejected the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and adhered to a dualistic belief system. In this print, we see the release of prisoners at Carcassonne, a city that was a stronghold for the Albigenses. The scene is filled with a sense of hope and relief as the shackles are removed from the hands and feet of the prisoners, many of whom had been held captive for years.
