In the foreground, Lieutenant John Hamilton of the Guide Corps is seen receiving the prestigious Victoria Cross from a British officer, in recognition of his exceptional courage and leadership during a daring cavalry charge. The Battle of Futtehabad took place on April 29, 1879, and was a significant engagement in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880), which saw the British Empire attempt to re-establish control over Afghanistan following the invasion of 1839.
