EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Adele, the enigmatic queen of Louis VI Le Gros, King of France, in the early 12th century. Adele, whose exact birth year is unknown, was the daughter of William X, Count of Nevers and Agnes of Poitou. She became the queen consort of Louis VI in approximately 1122, following the death of his first wife, Adelaide of Maurienne. Louis VI Le Gros, also known as Louis the Fat, ruled France from 1108 until his death in 1137. His reign was marked by military campaigns against Flanders, Anjou, and the Normans, as well as efforts to strengthen the royal administration and the monarchy's control over its territories. In this portrait, Adele is depicted in regal attire, wearing a long, flowing gown adorned with intricate patterns and a headdress adorned with precious jewels. Her expression is serene and confident, reflecting the strength and grace of the queen consort. The background is simple, with a plain, dark backdrop that emphasizes the richness of Adele's attire and the delicate details of her headdress. Despite the limited historical records about Adele, she is remembered as an influential figure in the history of France. She was the mother of three of Louis VI's children, including the future King Louis VII, and is believed to have played a role in the political and religious affairs of the kingdom during her husband's reign. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a powerful and enigmatic queen, whose legacy continues to captivate historians and scholars today.
