ACWW, Ugandan Student Nesta Rugumayo - Lady Aberdeen Scholar

Established in 1933, the ACWW ( The Associated Country Women of the World ) by 1962 had registered its first Lady Aberdeen Scholar at a British university. The scholarship was established with the vision of training female community leaders from developing countries to study nutrition and home economics in England. Nesta Rugumayo of Uganda spent a year at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. When she returned to Uganda, Rugumayo worked with the Community Development Department to help village women better meet the nutritional needs of their children and to play their full part in the development of their country. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures Nesta Rugumayo, an exceptional Ugandan student, as she stands confidently in front of a chalkboard at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1962. Nesta was the first Lady Aberdeen Scholar registered by the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), a global federation dedicated to empowering rural women since 1933. Established with a vision to train female community leaders from developing countries in nutrition and home economics, the scholarship enabled Nesta to study in England during the 1960s, a pivotal decade for social and political change. Upon her return to Uganda, Nesta dedicated herself to improving the nutritional wellbeing of village women and children, working closely with the Community Development Department. Her efforts played a significant role in enabling women to contribute more effectively to their country's development. This powerful image encapsulates the transformative impact of education and the determination of one woman to make a difference in her community. The ACWW's Lady Aberdeen Scholarship program continues to empower women leaders from developing countries, fostering sustainable change and promoting gender equality around the world.
