EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling activity at the Flying Boat Berth in Southampton. Steeped in history, this location has been a hub for flying boat services since 1919. The image showcases the iconic BOAC Flying Boat Services that operated from here after World War II. In April 1948, BOAC launched their new service from a terminal located in the Old Docks of Southampton. This marked an exciting chapter as destinations such as Australia, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Karachi, and Tokyo became easily accessible to travelers. The sight of these majestic flying boats taking off and landing on Southampton Water must have been awe-inspiring. However, despite its initial success, economic challenges led to the withdrawal of BOAC's service by November 1950. Yet hope was not lost for those seeking adventure through air travel. Aquila Airlines stepped in to continue operating flying boat services from Southampton until 1958. The photograph offers a glimpse into an era when aviation was still evolving and capturing people's imaginations. It serves as a reminder of how far we've come since then while also honoring the pioneering spirit that once filled these skies. Thanks to Historic England's Aerofilms Collection, we can appreciate this aerial perspective that showcases both land and sea coming together harmoniously with aircraft soaring above it all.
