Atrium JLP01_09_920152
Vintners Place, Upper Thames Street, Queenhithe, City of London. A view from an upper window at the south end of the galleria looking out across the open atrium during construction at Vintners Place.
Laing undertook the £ 79m management contract for the construction of a 37, 000sqm high quality office development at Vintners Place between March 1989 and December 1992. Work on site began in June 1989 with the demolition of 10 buildings including Vintry House and Kennet Wharf on the riverside. The listed facade of Thames House along Queen Street Place was preserved and incorporated into the development. The project was the first within the City of London in modern times permitted to reclaim land from the Thames foreshore for its riverside facade

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing view from an upper window at the south end of the galleria in Vintners Place, located on Upper Thames Street in Queenhithe, City of London. Taken during the construction phase, it offers a unique perspective of the open atrium within this remarkable office development. Managed by Laing under a £79 million contract between March 1989 and December 1992, Vintners Place spanned an impressive 37,000 square meters. The project commenced with the demolition of ten buildings including Vintry House and Kennet Wharf along the riverside in June 1989. However, to preserve its historical significance, the listed facade of Thames House on Queen Street Place was carefully integrated into this modern development. What makes this project truly exceptional is that it became the first endeavor within modern times where land was reclaimed from the Thames foreshore for its stunning riverside facade. This feat showcases both innovation and respect for heritage. In this image filled with light and glazed surfaces, we catch a glimpse of people diligently working amidst construction activities. It serves as a testament to their dedication towards creating an extraordinary space that seamlessly blends history with contemporary design. This print is part of Historic England Archive's collection and provides us with a fascinating insight into one chapter of London's architectural evolution during the bustling 1990s.
