EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the renowned Victorian photographer Harry Bedford Lemere in 1893, offers a glimpse into the past of London's vibrant Oxford Street. The image showcases the Oxford Music Hall, a significant cultural landmark that once stood proudly on the north side of Oxford Street between A. E. Mills, the famous hatter, and Goldsteins Chemical Diamonds. The Oxford Music Hall, a grand Victorian edifice, was opened in 1861 by Charles Morton and served as a popular entertainment venue for over six decades. By the late 19th century, it had become a renowned music hall, attracting audiences with its diverse line-up of performances, from music and comedy to acrobatics and magic shows. In the photograph, the red-brick facade of the Oxford Music Hall stands out against the grey backdrop of the city. The intricate details of its architectural design are evident, with ornate carvings adorning the entrance and decorative arches framing the windows. The large, illuminated sign atop the building proudly announces its name, drawing the eye of passersby. Sadly, the Oxford Music Hall's days as a beloved entertainment venue were numbered. It was eventually demolished in 1926, making way for new developments. Today, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of this once-thriving music hall on Oxford Street in Westminster, London.
