EDITORS COMMENTS
Witley Court, located in Great Witley, Worcestershire, England, once stood as a grand testament to the opulence and elegance of the Victorian era. As seen in this photograph taken by Bedford Lemere in September 1920, the stunning gardens of Witley Court are showcased in all their splendor, with the Perseus and Andromeda fountain taking center stage in the foreground. The existing house at Witley Court underwent a significant transformation in the 19th century, as renowned architect John Nash oversaw its conversion into a vast Italianate mansion. Simultaneously, the gardens were meticulously landscaped by the skilled hand of William Nesfield, resulting in a harmonious blend of architectural grandeur and natural beauty. The Perseus and Andromeda fountain, a captivating work of art, is the focal point of this idyllic scene. The mythological tale of Perseus rescuing Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus is brought to life through the intricate design of the fountain, with Perseus triumphantly holding aloft the head of Medusa as water cascades from above. Tragically, the majestic Witley Court was gutted by fire in 1937, leaving only the shell of its former glory. However, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the grandeur and beauty that once was, and the enduring allure of the gardens that continue to captivate visitors to this day.
