This hand-coloured engraving captures a tragic moment in the history of balloon flight. Entitled "Ballooning CVS01_01_036 (Tales of balloon flight)" it showcases MP Walter Powell and Captain Templer suspended in the basket of the Saladin balloon. The image dates back to 10th December 1881, when disaster struck near Bridport. In this fateful incident, Captain Templer miraculously escaped as the ill-fated balloon crashed, propelling him clear from danger. However, tragically, MP Walter Powell met an untimely demise after being carried out to sea by uncontrollable winds.
