EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in British history - the marriage of Princess Anne to William, Prince of Orange. The image takes us back to the year 1733, where we find ourselves inside the grand Chapel Royal at St James Palace in London. The scene is filled with elegance and regality as guests gather to witness this union between two prominent figures. The colored engraving from the Mayson Beeton Collection brings life to every detail, showcasing the ornate architecture of the chapel and capturing the essence of this historic event. Princess Anne, known as the Princess Royal and eldest daughter of George II, stands radiantly beside her groom. William IV of Orange, son of John William Friso and heir to his cousin William III's throne, exudes confidence and nobility. As we delve into this snapshot from history, it is worth noting that while the date on record states March 25th, 1734 for their wedding day; there seems to be an error by Mayson Beeton Collection who labeled it as occurring in 1733 (6A_JAM_1733_M). Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a testament to love transcending borders and uniting nations. It reminds us that even centuries ago, marriages were not just personal affairs but significant political alliances shaping Europe's future. Through this remarkable image captured by Historic England Photo Library's lens, we are transported back in time - witnessing a pivotal moment that forever altered both British monarchy and Dutch history.
