Women Chasing Crickets on an Autumn Moor, early 1790s. In the waning days of summer, autumn insects begin to sing, heralding the approach of autumn. The two courtesans and their servant chase crickets among flowering bush clover, one of the flowers of autumn. In the background ancient courtiers enjoy the same pastime. Women Chasing Crickets on an Autumn Moor, early 1790s

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Chōbunsai Eishi, we are transported to the enchanting world of autumn in ancient Japan. As summer fades away, the sweet melodies of autumn insects fill the air, signaling the arrival of a new season. Against a backdrop of vibrant flowering bush clover, two elegant courtesans and their servant engage in a delightful pursuit - chasing crickets. The scene is not confined to these women alone; in the distance, we catch glimpses of courtiers from centuries past indulging in the same playful activity. It is a timeless tradition that transcends time and connects generations through shared joy. A closer look reveals intricate details meticulously captured by Eishi's masterful hand. Adorning the kimono of one woman on the left are delicate plovers known as chidori - migratory shorebirds that grace Japan during autumn and spring. Symbolic and revered for centuries, these birds take flight across countless works of art and poetry. This color woodblock print from the Edo period invites us to immerse ourselves in its beauty while reminding us of nature's cyclical rhythm. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, it serves as a testament to Japanese heritage and artistic excellence.
