Westminster Improvements - New Houses in the Broad Sanctuary, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Westminster Improvements - New Houses in the Broad Sanctuary, 1854. Victorian Gothic buildings near Westinster Abbey in London, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The mass of building consists of eight houses, one of which forms the Gate Tower to Dean's-yard...Had they not been in such close contact with the Abbey, [Scott] would, probably, have ventured upon rather a more free treatment of the style, and a less rigid adherence to ancient character...The bold Gatehouse in the centre gives the whole at first sight somewhat of the appearance of a public building; but the architect has attempted to obviate this by endeavouring to make the subdivision into individual houses as evident as possible; and by giving considerable variety of feature to the different parts'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

Westminster Improvements - New Houses in the Broad Sanctuary, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an enchanting monochrome print showcasing a set of Victorian Gothic buildings located near Westminster Abbey in London. Designed by the renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, this architectural marvel consists of eight houses, one of which serves as the Gate Tower to Dean's-yard. The print, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, highlights the intricacies of Scott's design. Had these buildings not been in such close proximity to the Abbey, Scott might have taken more creative liberties and deviated from the ancient character. The bold Gatehouse in the center initially gives the impression of a public building, but Scott aimed to counteract this by making the division into individual houses as evident as possible and providing considerable variety to the different parts. The Victorian Gothic Revival style is evident in the buildings' pointed arches, intricate stonework, and ornate details. The Gatehouse, in particular, stands out with its grandeur and imposing presence. The print also highlights the exterior of the houses, revealing their intricate facades and the way in which they seamlessly blend with the historic surroundings of Westminster. This print offers a glimpse into the architectural beauty of 19th-century London and the innovative designs of Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of Gothic architecture and the impact it had on urban development during this period.
