Village Scene (Southern France), c. 1853. Creator: Andre-Adolphe-Eugene Disderi

Village Scene (Southern France), c. 1853. Although best known for his development of the carte-de-visite photograph which immortalized many a Parisian, Disderis photographic career began around 1850 in a daguerrian studio in Brest. Beset with financial problems, he left his studio, wife, and family and moved to Nimes in December 1852 or January 1853 where he learned the wet collodion-on-glass and wax paper negative processes. The oval vignette cropping and picturesque approach to the posed, but seemingly spontaneous, arrangement of figures and animals engaged in an outdoor activity in Village Scene is typical of the work Disderi produced in Nimes in 1853, for he abandoned the wax paper negative soon after learning it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Village Scene (Southern France), c. 1853" captures the essence of rural life in 19th century France. Created by Andre-Adolphe-Eugene Disderi, a renowned French photographer known for his innovation in the field, this image showcases his early work before he became famous for developing the carte-de-visite photograph. Disderi's journey as a photographer began in Brest around 1850, but financial difficulties forced him to leave his studio and family behind. He eventually settled in Nimes in late 1852 or early 1853, where he honed his skills using wet collodion-on-glass and wax paper negative processes. In this particular piece, Disderi employs an oval vignette cropping technique that adds a touch of elegance to the composition. The scene depicts figures and animals engaged in outdoor activities within a picturesque village setting. Although posed, there is an air of spontaneity that makes it feel alive and vibrant. The salted paper print from waxed paper negative gives the image a unique texture and depth that enhances its overall aesthetic appeal. This artwork is now part of The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, showcasing Disderi's talent as one of France's notable photographers during the 19th century. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time to experience the charm and simplicity of village life in Southern France over a century ago—a testament to both Disderi's skill as an artist and our enduring fascination with capturing moments frozen forever through photography.
