EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable text page from the 14th century, originating in Damascus during the Mamluk period. The creator of this intricate piece remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to its historical significance. The Arabic prose displayed on the verso is extracted from "The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices" by Inb al-Razza al-Jazari. The image depicts a fascinating automaton device featuring a peacock filled with water. As the water flows into the vessel below, it triggers a series of mechanical movements. A float rises and opens a door in the upper section, causing a small figure to advance towards viewers while offering soap. With more water flowing, another door opens and yet another figure emerges, presenting a towel. Finally, through the use of a spigot mechanism, dirty water is drawn off. This artwork exemplifies both artistic mastery and scientific innovation prevalent during that era. Its delicate ink and opaque watercolor strokes bring life to every detail captured on paper. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art as part of their heritage collection, this manuscript serves as an invaluable testament to human ingenuity throughout history. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has skillfully reproduced this extraordinary piece for all art enthusiasts to appreciate and marvel at its timeless beauty.
