Taking Possession of Cape Bernacchi, Victoria Land, c1908, (1909)

Taking Possession of Cape Bernacchi, Victoria Land, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of "Taking Possession of Cape Bernacchi, Victoria Land" during Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition in 1908. Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish explorer renowned for his daring expeditions, made significant contributions to Antarctic exploration. In this image, we see Shackleton and three companions proudly standing with the Union Jack flag unfurled at Cape Bernacchi. This act symbolizes their claim on this uncharted territory as they push further towards the South Pole. The harsh weather conditions are evident from the snow-covered landscape surrounding them. Shackleton's second expedition set a new record for Farthest South latitude at 88° S, bringing them within a mere 97 geographical miles of reaching the elusive South Pole. Additionally, members of his team successfully climbed Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. The significance of this achievement is highlighted by Shackleton being knighted by King Edward VII in recognition of his remarkable accomplishments. However, tragedy struck during his third expedition when he lost his life at just 47 years old. This powerful illustration comes from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Vol. I written by E. H. Shackleton himself and published in London in 1909. It serves as a testament to Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in exploring unknown territories while enduring extreme conditions.
