EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sugg Sport's Pinstone Street store in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, back in 1960. The three-story shop unit proudly displays a wide range of sports and electrical goods in its window, showcasing the variety that Sugg Sport had to offer. The story behind Sugg Sport is equally fascinating. Founded by Frank Howe Sugg in 1888, this business quickly became a leading supplier of football, cricket, and fishing equipment. Frank himself was an accomplished sportsman who achieved a rare feat by playing at least one first team game for both Derbyshire County Cricket Club and Derby County Football Club. After his playing career ended, he transitioned into umpiring before establishing his successful sporting goods enterprise. Sugg Sport remained a prominent figure in the industry until its closure in 2002. This photograph serves as a nostalgic reminder of the company's heyday during the mid-20th century when it catered to sports enthusiasts across England. Captured by Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this monochrome image showcases not only the exterior of the store but also provides glimpses into life on Pinstone Street during that era. It stands as a testament to Sheffield's rich retailing history and offers viewers an opportunity to step back in time to experience British street culture from the sixties.
