State troops to the rescue in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 9 September 1919. Artist

State troops to the rescue in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 1919. A Company going on duty during the citys Police Strike, which broke out on 9 September 1919. Widespread civil disorder broke out in the city and the Massachusetts Militia was deployed to restore order. US President Woodrow Wilson desribed the strike as a crime against civilization. State Governor Calvin Coolidge intervened to end the strike, sacking 1100 of the striking officers and hiring 1574 replacements from the ranks of unemployed World War I veterans. The new officers received higher salaries, more holiday entitlement and uniforms provided by the city, some of the demands their predecessors had struck for. Cooloidges actions gave a substantial boost to his political career and he was nominated as Warren Hardings Vice-Presidential candidate for the 1920 election

EDITORS COMMENTS
State troops to the rescue in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 9 September 1919. This powerful print captures a pivotal moment during the city's Police Strike of 1919. As widespread civil disorder erupted throughout Boston, State Governor Calvin Coolidge made the bold decision to deploy Massachusetts Militia troops to restore order and protect its citizens. The image showcases A Company as they march onto duty amidst the chaos that engulfed the city streets. These brave men, armed with rifles and dressed in their military uniforms, symbolize a beacon of hope for law and order during this turbulent time. President Woodrow Wilson condemned the strike as a 'crime against civilization, ' highlighting its destructive impact on society. However, it was Governor Coolidge's decisive actions that ultimately brought an end to this industrial dispute. He dismissed over a thousand striking officers and replaced them with unemployed World War I veterans who were eager for employment opportunities. Coolidge's intervention not only restored peace but also granted these new officers better working conditions - higher salaries, increased holiday entitlements, and provided uniforms by the city itself - addressing some of their predecessors' demands. This historic event propelled Calvin Coolidge's political career forward significantly. His leadership during this crisis led him to be nominated as Warren Harding's Vice-Presidential candidate for the upcoming 1920 election. This photograph from Heritage Images serves as a reminder of how strong leadership can bring stability even in times of great turmoil.
