EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Shiremark Mill, located in Capel, Surrey. Taken by artist James Ogilvy in 1912 and published in his book "A Pilgrimage In Surrey" this image transports us back to a time when windmills were an essential part of rural life. Shiremark Mill, built in 1774, stands tall against the picturesque countryside backdrop. Its unique design as a Smock mill incorporated materials salvaged from a previously demolished open trestle post mill. The mill's history is rich with ownership changes and familial ties; it was acquired by the Stone family in 1802 and remained under their care for over a century until 1919. Sadly, Shiremark Mill suffered neglect after 1933 and met its tragic fate when it succumbed to fire in 1972. However, through this photograph, we can still appreciate its grandeur and imagine the once-thriving hub of activity it must have been. Ogilvy's artistic eye captures not only the architectural beauty of Shiremark Mill but also preserves an important piece of local history that would otherwise be lost to time. This print serves as a poignant reminder of our connection to the past and the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations.
