Scene from the opera of "Otello"at Her Majestys Theatre, 1844
Scene from the opera of " Otello" at Her Majestys Theatre, 1844. Scene from a production of Gioachino Rossinis opera on the London stage: The Doge (Elmiro) denunciating his daughter (Desdemona) is perhaps, as treated by [Luigi] Lablache and [Giulia] Grisi, the most splendid lyric-tragic passage upon the Opera or indeed any other stage. The prostration of Grisi before the lightning blast of Lablaches malediction is truly awful...Mario as the Moor serves but as an accessory to the picture: he cannot stand out in any great prominence against the other mighty portraits. Garcia was the only Otello who could have withstood Lablaches Elmiro: but still Mario is very charming in the part and sings its music beautifully. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the grandeur of Her Majesty's Theatre in 1844, where a scene from Gioachino Rossini's opera "Otello" unfolds. The intensity of this moment is palpable as we witness the dramatic confrontation between Elmiro, portrayed by the renowned Luigi Lablache, and his daughter Desdemona, brought to life by the splendid Giulia Grisi. Lablache's commanding presence and powerful voice are evident as he denounces his daughter with an air of authority. Grisi, on the other hand, displays vulnerability and fear as she kneels before her father's wrathful gaze. Their performance together creates a truly awe-inspiring lyric-tragic passage that resonates deeply within the hearts of all who witness it. While Mario, playing Otello himself, may not stand out prominently against these mighty portraits, his charm and beautiful singing voice add another layer of enchantment to this theatrical masterpiece. Only Garcia could have rivaled Lablache's Elmiro but Mario holds his own admirably in this role. The engraving captures not only the talent displayed on stage but also highlights the intricate details of costumes and set design that transport us to 19th-century Britain. This image serves as a testament to both Italian opera excellence and British artistic appreciation during this era. Preserved through time in "Illustrated London News" this print allows us a glimpse into an unforgettable moment in theatrical history – one that showcases passion, emotion, and extraordinary talent coming together on stage at Her Majesty's Theatre.
