Saint Peter Repentant, 1645. Creator: Georges de La Tour (French, 1593-1652)

Saint Peter Repentant, 1645. During Jesuss arrest on the night of the Last Supper, the apostle Peter denied knowing him. Although Christ forgave his betrayal, Peter was consumed by guilt. La Tour represents Peter as an old man, reflecting on his past actions in a state of perpetual repentance. The apostles red-rimmed eyes and the uncertain light of the lantern suggest anxious sleepless nights; muted colours and simple forms give visual expression to Peters somber emotions. Unlike other artists inspired by Caravaggio, La Tour worked in relative isolation in northeastern France, and his connection to his Italian counterpart remains unclear

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures Georges de La Tour's masterpiece, "Saint Peter Repentant" painted in 1645. The painting depicts a poignant moment from the night of the Last Supper when Saint Peter denied knowing Jesus during his arrest. Despite Christ's forgiveness, Peter was tormented by guilt and remorse. La Tour portrays Saint Peter as an elderly man, deep in contemplation and repentance. His red-rimmed eyes reflect sleepless nights filled with anxiety and regret. The dimly lit lantern adds to the atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding Peter's emotions. In this artwork, La Tour employs muted colors and simple forms to convey the somberness of Peter's state of mind. The artist's connection to Caravaggio is uncertain since he worked in relative isolation in northeastern France. It showcases La Tour's exceptional talent for capturing human emotion through oil on canvas. "Saint Peter Repentant" serves as a powerful reminder that even those closest to us are capable of betraying their beliefs but can find redemption through sincere repentance. This evocative image invites viewers to reflect on their own actions and seek forgiveness for past wrongdoings.
